VIVA ELVIS is the brainchild of Aimee Chow, Dave Hattorimanabe, Joe Lowell and Sara Tarr four individuals whom fate brought together in Principles of Information Architecture at UC Berkeley Extension. On an impulse they set out in the spring of 1999 to explore Elvis cyberspace. The result is VIVA ELVIS, a compendium of reviews and recommendations of Elvis sites. This website is not just their class project it's also a digital document of their encounters with the good, the bad, and the truly bizarre in a strange and wondrous pelvis-swingin' cosmos.
Aside from a recently-acquired predilection for fried peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches, not much is known about the members of VIVA ELVIS. It is hard for them, even in private, to talk about themselves or to discuss why they undertook the journey to sort out the many controversies and legends that surround a man who is musician, heartthrob, laughingstock, king, and gourmand all zipped up into one jumpsuit.
Equally difficult for VIVA ELVIS to talk about are the memorable and description-defying pages that some fans have set up, with their odd color schemes, their extreme devotion and adulation, and their ungodly obsession with velvet and sideburns. As they made their way in the Elvis universe, Amy, Dave, Joe, and Sara came face-to-face with indescribable manifestations ranging from a bleu-cheese likeness of the King to an auction of Elvis' underwear. Not surprisingly, Dave has admitted that he remains "all shook up" and must now sleep with the hall light on.
