Nothin' But a Chow Hound?

Although each Elvis biographer paints The King in a different light, they all agree on one point: Elvis enjoyed food. Perhaps he enjoyed it too much— his relationship with eating and his weight gain in the last years of his life have been the subject of much speculation and downright mean commentary.

BBC even made a documentary (to use the term loosely) titled The Burger & The King: The Life and Cuisine of Elvis Presley with Elvis' dietary habits as the subject. The film was unflattering enough that the Elvis Presley estate tried to block its airing in the U.S. It seems that the making of the film also upset someone else.

Don't Knock It... Try It!

His critics believe that much of his enormous appetite was directed towards junk food, but those who knew Elvis best will tell you that what he enjoyed the most was home cooking (Southern-style, of course!). People who don't really know Southern cooking often scorn it, but in recent years some cooks have shared with us excellent Southern recipes that, in taste and heartiness, rival those of the more respected cuisines.

Sociologists and anthropologists take note: Elvis followers in the First Presleyterian Church of Elvis the Divine have codified the list into what is now known (and revered) as the Thirty-One Commandments of Elvis.

Those who think that he is no longer alive may be interested to know that Elvis' last meal consisted of— depending on whom you believe— either chocolate-chip cookies and ice cream or a fried peanut-butter-and-banana sandwich.
