CHATTAHOOCHEE VALLEY PFLAG

Minutes for July 10, 2000

The Chattahoochee Valley chapter of PFLAG met July 10 at 7:30 p.m. with Reverend Colley facilitating.

After everyone introduced himself or herself, the meeting continued with Sy bringing to our attention that the National Gay and Lesbian Taskforce (NGLTF) has information on their website about the track records of candidates running for office. The NGLTF website is located at www.ngltf.org. Sy also asked if anyone knew whom to contact about getting "Justice For All: Out of the Closet and into the Living Room" on local PBS. He read aloud a response letter he would send to someone interested in attending PFLAG.

Carol Benowitz, the regional director of PFLAG, sent information about funds available for grant proposals from local PFLAG chapters. The grants of $3000 are provided for groups working to educate the public regarding groups suffering from discrimination. A committee was formed, with Sy as the chairman, to send a letter of intent and work on a proposal. The committee will meet within the next two weeks.

Sy mentioned some problems in finding current information on the PRIDE website. He and Jason, the webmaster, will meet later to discuss how the website might be improved.

The grant committee will discuss how funds from the grant might be used for the Love Walk proposed to take place in the Fall.

Family of God Metropolitan Community Church is planning a film festival beginning on Friday, July 21. The festival will be every other Friday. Suggestions for movies to be included are welcome, and a flyer will be distributed in the near future.

Anchored In Christ Ministries invited everyone to go with them to the Surf Side, the water park in Auburn, on the second Saturday in August.

Fellowship of Love announced a bible study on Thursday nights at the Unitarian Universalist building. They will also be participating in a Cultural Diversity event at the Civic Center on August 13.

Frank announced a group of local Pride chapters in Georgia is forming to share resources and information for future events. The Chattahoochee Valley chapter of Pride will meet on Monday, August 7. Frank proposed that next year’s Pride event occur on a Sunday instead of Saturday so more people could attend. Reverend Bell countered that the event needed more publicity not a different day to increase attendance. The discussion was tabled for the Pride meeting in August.

A date has not yet been set for the estate planning and wills seminar. Steve announced that Prudential is offering a new branch of services devoted to Gay and Lesbian customers. In addition to stockbrokers, managed portfolios and mutual funds, the new gay-friendly branch also has a list of other gay-friendly companies. Sy informed everyone that Lambda Legal has an excellent website with pages about wills, estate planning, and so on located at:  http://lldef.org/cgi-bin/pages/new/planning

The need for more advertising was raised and Reverend Emily suggested that Sy was the most qualified individual to inquire about rates.

Ron announced that anyone with questions or issues could talk with one of the pastors, himself, or any of the other PFLAG leaders.

The plate was passed around for donations and the meeting was adjourned.
