August 14, 2000 PFLAG Meeting

The minutes for the August 2000 meeting of the Chattahoochee Valley chapter
of PFLAG:

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. with approximately 40 people
in attendance; chapter president Ray Slocumb moderated.

The meeting began with a welcome to PFLAG and an explanation of the purpose
of the organization. New guests were greeted and offered help if needed.
Emily, Colley, and Ray then offered an update on activities in the local
churches. Upcoming events include several special worship services, a new
bi-weekly film festival at the MCC church, and a workshop called
"Homosexuality and the Bible".

Frank then gave an update on Chattahoochee Valley Pride, giving details of
the first meeting to be held on August 28. PFLAG members were invited to
attend and offer input on next year's event.

The next subject discussed was the PFLAG Love Walk to be held in the spring
of 2001. Ron gave an update on the two planning meetings held since the last
PFLAG meeting. He read the grant proposal letter that was being sent to try
to obtain funding for the event, and also a letter to PFLAG chapters in
various communities in Southern Georgia inviting them to attend. Details for
the next meeting to be held on August 21 were also discussed. Finally, a
vote was held to get the general membership's approval to move forward with
the grant proposal and planning.

The floor was then opened for new business; there was none discussed. The
meeting then adjourned for refreshments.

After the break, the remainder of the evening was spent discussing the
recent denial by the city of Columbus to allow PFLAG to have a booth at the
Columbus diversity festival. In attendance at the meeting was the reporter
for the Ledger who brought the stories to the attention of the news media.
Ray read the four articles concerning the event. Discussion then followed as
to what the best course of action would be. It was decided that we would
attempt to get a member on the committee overseeing the festival before next
year's event. Also, we decided to submit our request for participation
immediately, and directly to the mayor. This would hopefully avoid any
confusion or other problems from arising. It was decided that no boycotts or
protests of any sort would be organized at this point.

Ray thanked the people in attendance for coming. The meeting was adjourned.
