Linux

What can i say about Linux?

Well, Linux is an almost free Operating System for the PC.
Runs similarily to Unix ie. all dos prompt command line instructions, but these days, you can get an interface that makes it look like Windows.
It is also more stable and has most things that the average person would need built in>
Linux has a word processor included that runs alot like MS Word, and even opens Word 97 document.
It also has spreadsheets and a calendar to name a few things.

Also, i am very tempted to go to an Apple.
Some of their new machines are excellent, the programs that come with it as well as the LCD screen.
Plus Apples use a different processor to the standard PC, the processor runs slower in clock speed but still out perform the pc's that run Micro$oft Windows.
Have a look at www.apple.com.au.

Actually, i dont have the time to commit to reading about Linux so i am very tempted to ditch the PC and get an Apple.

Why am i talking about Linux?
The answer is quite simple really, when Microsoft get their act together and bring out a programme that doesn't crash almost every day, then i might be tempted to stay.
(XP isn't much different except that when a program crashes the whole system doesn't shut down like previous editions)

I have heard or Linux running for 18 months without a reboot, NT needs to be rebooted about every 47days.

My main PC dies all too often, sometimes i have to reboot a few times as it runs out of resources or things just crash that shouldn't.
Am getting to the stage that i will have to rebuild this PC, but it isnt 12months old yet.

Also, the cost is small, i got a handguide and the 3 cdroms from the newsagency for under $20 AU.
From memory, when i bought Windows 98SE, it cost nearly $200.

What is the final statement here?

Windows sux!!! So i am learning Linux, and will be migrating as soon as i can to Linux, only to touch Windows at work :-(   (cause i have to)
Actually, my work has just migrated to XP and what a f*cking disaster, the network has come to a crawl.
Our IT Techs put some patches to try and make it work better, what a waste of time that was.
Now they have Micro$oft as well as Dell in to try and get the system running preXP speed.

Versions

Linux comes in versions with different distrbutions.
Redhat is what i am using on the laptop, not for any reason other than it was already on it.
Currently trying to get Redhat 7.3 to load on it, not easy, there might be a bug somewhere that it doesnt like the laptop.  I ended up going back to 7.1

The different versions have names, Debian, another Distrobution, has 2 versions that i know of, Potato and Woody. Both are characters from the movie "Toy Story".
I dont know why that took that for the names.

RedHat 7.0 series started off with Guiness, 7.1 was called Seawolf, 7.2 was called Enigma and the last is 7.3 called Valhalla. Redhat has split off the personal version and called if Fedora, upto build 3 at the moment.

Distrobutions / Distros

As i have already mention above, there is more than one version of Linux, RedHat ( www.redhat.com ) and Debian.

There is so many, it is hard to list, and some are very specific, eg, some are webservers and you wouldn't even know it.

Other names for Distros are Mandrake, Corel, Caldera, Icepack, TurboLinux, Slackware, just to name a few, there is something like well over 50 distros.

As for which version is right for you, well, you can either do the research and try and work it out, or just go with what the popular ones are, eg Redhat, Debian.

And rumour has it, that Microsoft is making there own distro of Linux.
The only catch is, the current desktops use either the Gnome foot or a the KDE "K in a cog" instead of the start button, and they are not able to be changed.
And the other catch is, knowing how Microsoft charge, you can expect them to charge for their version.

Laptops?

Yeah, Linux runs on laptops.

How do i know?

I got a Acer Laptop from Ebay.com.  You can also go to Everythinglinux.com.au and get a PC running Linux.

The Acer Laptop

Okay, so it aint a new one, but then again, i dont need a new one.
Just a laptop that works and WTIO had already installed RED HAT 7.1 on it.
Now, i need  to get the scanner/printer going, get Samba running to view Windows machines, and any other vital software running.
I will be giving Micro$oft the big miss.

Plus at the Humbug meeting for Linux users here in Brisbane, earlier 2003, someone setup my laptop to access the internet>
So i am now able to connect AOL IM, Yahoo IM, and run XChat instead of mIRC.
I still have a very long way to go with Linux, but i would rather use it then the buggy stuff that Micro$oft puts out.
(Some time ago, i read in a computer magazine that Micro$oft stopped all new work in favour of fixing up their faulty software!! Not sure where this ended up though)

I built myself a new pc in the beginning of November 2002 and got RedHat 8.0, but for some reason or another, they didn't want to work too well together.
So i have pushed back going totally Linux, i dont have the time to give it that it deserves.
